Well first of all, last year I swam my first 100m in competition. One thing I will ell you is that is is hard when you first begin but the more and more you do swimming, the less hard it becomes!
This year I swam the most I have ever swam which was 450m freestyle and that is 18 lengths (it was supposed to be 400m and 16 lengths but I miscounted and so swam even further!) I was proud of myself and so was my swimming teacher.
Since I started swimming my family have been incredibly supportive including my brother who cannot normally sit still just watching me. The one person who is always there for me in swimming is my mum, she takes me to most lessons and when I go to Sheffield for competitions.
Elise, 12 years
Elise has hemiplegia which affects her right arm and leg. I never knew whether Elise would be able to swim as she has very little use of her right arm. We tried swimming lessons before we found Teamipswich Swimming and got nowhere. Not long after we found Teamipswich, Elise was swimming by herself. She now swims at competition level and trains 2 - 3 times a week.
As a parent I was initially worried about taking Elise to sessions that were just for disabled children, but she has made many friends and her self confidence has grown. It is so important for her to have something she is good at and mix with children who have some of the same difficulties as her.
I began volunteering poolside about 2 years ago as I wanted to help and last year I completed my ASA Teaching Aquatics Level 1 qualification. I now teach other children while Elise is swimming. Teaching is really rewarding and I get a lot of enjoyment out of helping.
